Inheritance

Why does a brown kitten come from two black cats? Your teenager fills Punnett squares for Mendel’s pea colours, predicts what twenty seeds will give and watches chance land close to, but not exactly on, the square. Then they work backwards from a litter of kittens to the parents.

Inheritance, a screen from the game

What your child learns

  • Dominant and recessive: big Y wins over small y
  • Filling a Punnett square: one letter from each parent
  • Expected ratios and real chance: close, not exact
  • Reasoning backwards from offspring to parents

How to play

Tap each box of the square: it takes one letter from the top parent and one from the side parent, and shows the pea. Then choose how many are green. On level 2 choose how many of 20, then tap Grow. On level 3 tap the pair of parents that could have the kittens.

Levels

  1. Level 1Fill the square and count the green peas.
  2. Level 2Predict 20 peas, then grow them.
  3. Level 3Which parents could have these kittens?

A tip for parents

Look at family traits together, like eye colour or curly hair, and talk about why brothers and sisters can look different.
