Four in a Row

Four in a Row is a quick strategy game: drop a counter into a column and it falls to the lowest empty hole. Four of your colour in a line, across, down or slanting, wins. It looks simple, but every move opens or closes a line, so children learn to look ahead.

What your child learns

  • Seeing lines across, down and on the slant
  • Blocking a threat before it is too late
  • Planning two moves ahead
  • Taking turns and playing fair

How to play

Tap a column, or hover it with the mouse to see where your counter will fall. Owlie answers with a yellow counter. Get four in a row first. Choose “A friend” to play two on one screen.

Levels

  1. Level 1Owlie wins when she can, but does not block you.
  2. Level 2Owlie blocks your three in a row.
  3. Level 3Owlie looks five moves ahead: plan a double threat.

A tip for parents

Ask your child why they chose a column. Explaining a move out loud is where planning skills grow.
