Backgammon

Backgammon is one of the oldest board games in the world, and Owlie makes it easy to learn. Tap the dice, tap a white checker, and the points it can reach light up with the die each one uses. Children see the rules at work instead of reading them.

What your child learns

  • Adding dice and counting points on the board
  • Hitting, the bar and coming back in
  • Bearing off once every checker is home
  • Weighing risk: safe points and lone checkers

How to play

Tap the dice to roll. Tap one of your white checkers: the green points show where it can go and which die it uses. Tap one to move. Doubles move four times. Bring all fifteen checkers home, then bear them off first to win.

Levels

  1. Level 1The race home: no hitting, just roll, move and bear off.
  2. Level 2The full game against a random Owlie.
  3. Level 3The full game against a careful Owlie who hits and keeps her checkers safe.

A tip for parents

Backgammon mixes luck and judgement, so a child can beat an adult. The doubling cube is left out to keep it simple.
