Privacy policy

Owlie is a place for children to play and learn. We keep as little as we can, we never show ads, and we never sell or share anyone’s data. This page says exactly what we keep and why.
Who we are
Owlie (owlie.kids) is run by Owlie Kids, Bulgaria. We are the “controller” of the data described here.
Write to hello@owlie.kids about anything on this page.
The short version
No ads, no tracking, no analytics cookies, no selling or sharing of data. Children never create accounts and never type their email or real name. Without an account, everything stays on your device; we only count how many times each game is started, as anonymous totals.
Playing without an account
Children’s profiles (a nickname, an animal picture, an age group and a language), their levels, stickers and play time, and the parents’ corner settings are kept only in this browser on this device. We do not receive them.
To show encyclopedia cards and to read texts aloud, the site asks our server for an article or a spoken sentence. Only the article or the sentence is sent, nothing about the child.
Like every website, our hosting provider sees your IP address to deliver the pages and to protect the site from attacks. We count requests per address for a minute to stop abuse; we do not keep a log of who played what.
We count how many times each game is started each day, as totals only, with no identifiers, so we know which games children enjoy. When a game starts, the site sends only the game, the level and the language; we add one to that day’s total and keep nothing else: no cookie, no ID, no address, no country. Parents can turn this off on a device in the parents’ corner (“Count game starts”).
With a parent account
If a parent signs in, we keep: the parent’s email address, the language they used, the country of their internet connection, when the account was made and when they agreed to this policy.
Sign-in codes are kept as scrambled hashes and deleted after one day. A signed-in browser keeps a session cookie; we keep only its hash, for up to 90 days.
To have the same children on every device, we keep for each child: the nickname (it can be empty), the animal picture, the age group, the language, levels per game and stickers. We never ask for a child’s birthday, photo, real name, school or location.
Why we may use this data
To give you the service you asked for: the account and syncing the children (a contract).
Keeping your children’s data: your consent as their parent or guardian, given when you sign in. You can withdraw it at any time by deleting the account.
Keeping the service safe, for example limits on sign-in emails (our legitimate interest).
Who helps us
Cloudflare: delivers the website and keeps the recorded voice clips. Google Cloud: runs our server in Frankfurt (Germany) and turns texts into speech. Neon: our database, in Frankfurt. Resend: sends the sign-in emails (it receives the email address and the code). Anthropic and Google: translate public encyclopedia articles; they receive only the article text, never anything about you or your children.
Some of them are US companies. Where data leaves the EU, it is protected by the EU Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
How long we keep it
Sign-in codes: one day. Sessions: up to 90 days. The account and the children’s data: until you delete the account. Deleting removes it from our database at once and from backups within 30 days.
Your rights
In the parents’ corner you can see and change the children’s profiles, download everything we keep (“Download our data”) and delete the account (“Delete account”).
You may also ask us to correct or delete data, object to its use or withdraw your consent: write to hello@owlie.kids. If you think we got something wrong, you can complain to the Bulgarian Commission for Personal Data Protection (cpdp.bg) or to the authority in your country.
Children
Owlie is made for children, used with a parent’s or guardian’s supervision. Only adults may make an account. We collect from children only what is listed above, and only with the consent of a parent (as the US Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, COPPA, and the EU GDPR require). A parent can review the children’s data, have it deleted and stop further collection at any time. We do not let children give us an email address.
Cookies and storage on your device
owlie_session: keeps a parent signed in (only after sign-in, up to 90 days). owlie_lang: remembers the chosen language. Browser storage keeps the children’s profiles, progress and settings on the device. We use no advertising or analytics cookies, so we do not ask you to accept any.
Changes
When this policy changes, the date at the top changes. If a change matters for parents with an account, we tell them by email before it applies.
