Battleship

Battleship is grid coordinates, logic and a little luck in one game. Your child fires at squares like B5, sinks ships and learns to hunt round a hit. Owlie plays fair but gets smarter level by level, and two children can play each other on one tablet, with a cover between turns.

What your child learns

  • Reading grid coordinates: a letter and a number
  • Planning shots: hunting round a hit, along a line
  • Ruling out squares: ships never touch
  • Taking turns and playing fair

How to play

Tap a square in the other sea to fire: a dot is a splash, a red cross is a hit, and a hit fires again. Ships are straight and never touch, so the squares round a sunk ship are marked. Choose Two players to play a friend; pass the tablet when the cover says so.

Levels

  1. Level 1A 6 × 6 sea and three ships; Owlie fires at random.
  2. Level 28 × 8 and four ships; Owlie hunts round your ships.
  3. Level 310 × 10 and five ships; Owlie plays like a good player.

A tip for parents

Play the paper version on squared paper together: draw two 10 × 10 grids, hide your ships and call out squares like B5.
