Area & Perimeter
Area and perimeter stop being two formulas when you build them with your own hands. Your child colours squares on squared paper to make a shape with a given area, watches the perimeter being counted all the way round, and finds out that the same area can have a short edge or a long one.

What your child learns
- Area as the number of squares inside a shape
- Perimeter as the length all the way round
- The same area can have different perimeters
- Thinking ahead: long and thin, or close to a square
How to play
Tap a square to colour it, tap it again to clear it, or drag across several. The area counts as you go; from level 2 the edge is drawn and counted too. Tap Check when your shape is ready: it must be one piece, with squares touching side by side.
Levels
- Level 1Make a shape with the area Owlie asks for.
- Level 2Make a shape with a given perimeter.
- Level 3Both at once, then the same area with a longer perimeter.
A tip for parents
Draw shapes on squared paper from a school exercise book together. Which has more squares inside? Which has a longer fence round it?
