Orbit Sandbox

A gravity simulator: a star in the middle and a planet launched sideways at the speed your teen chooses. Too slow and it falls in, too fast and it flies away, just right and it orbits.

What your child learns

  • How speed and gravity make an orbit
  • Circular and oval (elliptical) orbits
  • Why farther planets take longer to go round

How to play

Set the speed and launch. First make the planet go round; then make the orbit a circle (an oval says faster or slower); then guess which of two planets comes round first, and watch. Four right answers finish a level.

Levels

  1. Level 1Make it orbit, not fall in or fly away.
  2. Level 2Make the orbit a circle.
  3. Level 3Which planet comes round first?

A tip for parents

Swing a ball on a string together: what happens when you let go?
