Column Sums
Written addition and subtraction, the way it’s taught at school: two numbers one under the other, and your child writes the answer from the right, one digit at a time.

What your child learns
- Adding in columns, with carrying
- Subtracting in columns, with borrowing (across zeros too)
- Decimals in columns
How to play
Your child types each digit on the digit pad or the keyboard, starting with the ones. Carries appear small above the next column; a ten taken when subtracting crosses out the top digit. A wrong digit: Owlie explains just that column.
Levels
- Level 1Two-digit sums with a carry.
- Level 2Three-digit subtractions with borrowing.
- Level 3Decimals.
A tip for parents
If your child is stuck, ask them to explain one column out loud: saying it often solves it.
